This is my second visit to Korce, and I could not resist another visit to the breathtaking National Museum of Medieval Art. It’s accommodated in a rather plain building. And the internal entrance is through an electric steel roller-shutter door, much like a Quick-Fit garage! As you step inside there are hundreds of carefully lit icons displayed, some dating back to the sixteenth century. As you gaze into the icons standing just inches close, you’re drawn into the amazing images, the colours are stunning.

The young conservator attendant told me that when Enver Hoxha destroyed churches in Albania during the 1960’s, he retained many of the icons as a cultural record. So though sadly most of the churches have gone, icons remain. I asked the conservator why they hadn’t been reunited with the Albanian Orthodox Church — he really didn’t have an answer!
